Limonene

Limonene is a cyclic monoterpene found in the oils of most citrus plants. It is most commonly recognized by it’s citrus aroma. Limonene can be found in many over the counter personal care products, cleaning aids, and even the manufacturing of some foods & medicines. The fresh citrus fragrance from Limonene is added to lotions, bath soaps, and cosmetics. As a cleaning aid, Limonene can be used as a natural alternative to turpentine when the essential oil is extracted directly. Limonene is often added to medicines and foods to counter balance high alkaloid flavors. Limonene is the second most common terpene found in nature and the third most common terpene found in cannabis (1).

Many studies and been published showing the positive effects of aromatherapy which include improved sleep and relief from anxiety and depression. Often strains with higher levels of Limonene have helped promote an elevated and more motivated mood. This terpene is not limited to just indica or stativa either! Limonene in a Sativa can provide an exhilarating and energizing buzz, while Indica’s higher in Limonene can counter act the sedative effects of other terpenes.

Limonene has been shown to accumulate in the fatty tissues and as a result have had success in some cancer patients treatments. Specifically, Limonene has been researched and proven helpful with the following:

  • Skin Tumorigenesis
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma

  • Prostate Cancer
