Terpenes

by | Jun 10, 2020

We always hear THC, CBD and the other cannabinoids but what are terpenes? Terpenes are the components that provide flavor and scent. Terpenes also have different medical benefits. There are over 200 identified terpenes. Terps are found in all fruits and vegetables as well as in the cannabis plant. Here are some common terpenes and their benefits-

Limonene – Limonene is one of the most common terpenes found in nature and may offer several health benefits. It has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-stress, and possibly disease-preventing properties. It is great for daytime usage as it can give you sort of a pop that keeps you going with a positive attitude and good energy.

Linalool- Linalool is a relaxing terpene. It is common in lavender plants and indica strains. Linalool has been used in traditional medicine practices for its sedative and anti-epileptic properties.

Myrcene – Myrcene (also known as alpha-myrcene or beta-myrcene) is the most common and a particularly potent terpene, with a spicy, earthy, musky scent that gives cannabis strains a mildly sweet flavor profile. Myrcene is the terpene to turn to for calming the body and mind. It is the “couch lock” terpene.

Myrcene has powerful antibiotic, antimutagenic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and sedative effects. Working in synergy with THC, the terpene is ideal for patients suffering from insomnia, pain and bodily discomfort, muscle tension, diabetes and may have tumor reduction properties.

Beta-caryophyllene is a spicy, peppery terpene found in high concentrations across a variety of plants and herbs. BCP is most well-known for its anti-inflammatory effects. This is because the terpene binds to CB2 receptors, the parts of our bodies’ endocannabinoid systems responsible for regulating inflammation. Inflammation regulation is only one of several natural healing processes BC can activate. It may be good for weight loss. When combined with humulene, beta-caryophyllene binds to CB2 receptors to suppress appetite in doses of 10 to 200 mg.
BC is another terpene to target when looking for components with potential tumor reduction properties. It is also said to be good for combating alcoholism, anxiety and promoting brain heath.

Humulene is the hoppy terpene. It has been described as earthy, woody, spicy and herbal. Humulene works best against bacteria, inflammation, and tumors. Unlike most strains, humulene-rich cannabis is also anorectic, meaning it suppresses hunger. As an appetite suppressant, humulene works alongside other chemicals in cannabis to promote weight loss. It is good for treating pain, cancer, arthritis fibromyalgia and more. It has anti-bacterial properties and is toxic against fungus and pests.

Pinene is another common terpene that gives the plant a piney aroma. It is another great daytime terpene that has been said to mainly help increase alertness, creativity and euphoria. It is another anti inflammatory and is said to combat asthma.

Terps are just as important as cannibinoids. Ask your terpene about terpenes and how they may help you. Please check out this link to the terp wheel for more information https://greenerpacific.com/terpenes/
