Alcohol or Cannabis?

by | Jul 31, 2020

Cannabis usage is often grouped in with alcohol consumption as methods of finding relaxation, disconnecting from responsibilities and when used in excess induce intoxication. Depending on your goal for consuming cannabis it can be used for medicinal and recreational purposes. There is no medicinal value to alcohol. The cannabis inside of consumable cannabis products, whether labeled medical or recreational, is going to interact with the endocannabinoid system the same way. Whether labeled medical or recreational, cannabis will not kill you. Cannabis will not rot your insides. Cannabis will not fry your brain. So far knock on wood there have been 0 deaths from cannabis usage. Now let’s take a look at alcohol.

A cannabis activist named Ryan from South Jersey said “Cannabis is cannabis. You can call it medical you can call it recreational you can preface it with whatever you want but in the end, it’s all cannabis.”

Alcohol is responsible for the death of human beings every day. When consumed in excess and for extended periods of time, alcohol can destroy ones organs, decrease sex drive, and impair judgment. Alcohol usage can lead to legal trouble, familial issues, violence and less than desirable situations.

Ken Wolski, the Executive Director of the Coalition for Medical Marijuana said “Marijuana is 100 times safer than alcohol according to measurement by its therapeutic index. The therapeutic index is a comparison of the amount of a drug that causes a therapeutic effect to the amount that causes toxicity in humans. Quantitatively, it is the ratio given by the lethal or toxic dose divided by the therapeutic dose.
In animal studies, the therapeutic index is the lethal dose of a drug for 50% of the population (LD50) divided by the minimum effective dose for 50% of the population (ED50). Lethality is not determined in human clinical trials; instead, the dose that produces toxicity in 50% of the population (TD50) is used to calculate the therapeutic index.
A higher therapeutic index is preferable to a lower one: a patient would have to take a much higher dose of such a drug to reach the lethal/toxic threshold than the dose taken to elicit the therapeutic effect. Some drugs have a narrow therapeutic range, or little difference between toxic and therapeutic doses.
The therapeutic index varies widely among substances: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a sedative and analgesic of herbal origin (genus Cannabis), has a safe therapeutic index of 1000:1, while diazepam, a benzodiazepine sedative-hypnotic and skeletal muscle relaxant has a less-forgiving index of 100:1 and morphine, a sedative, antidepressant, and analgesic also of herbal origin (genus Papaver) has an index of 70:1 (which, however, is still considered very safe).
Less safe are cocaine, a stimulant and local anaesthetic; ethyl alcohol, a widely available sedative consumed world-wide: the therapeutic indices for these substances are 15:1 and 10:1 respectively. Even less safe are drugs such as digoxin, a cardiac glycoside; its therapeutic index is approximately 2:1.
So there you have it. The therapeutic index for THC is 1000:1 while the therapeutic index for alcohol is 10:1. THC is 100 times safer than alcohol by this measurement. But, I still drink on occasion.”

So we ask you; Alcohol or Cannabis?
